The Aboriginal Community of Ngukurr is situated atop a rocky rise on a bend of the Roper River, There are magnificent views of the surrounding valleys and region. Ngukurr is on the border of Arnhem land and NT and is one of the few communities you can visit in Arnhem land for the day without a permit. Ngukurr was originally a mission, bringing together the remaining clans tribes of the area. The art centre welcomes visitors and is a working building, so the shop is in the same building as the studio space which gives visitors a great opportunity to meet the artists and see them at work. Works for sale at Ngukurr are at wholesale prices and directly benefit the artist with 60% of every sale going to the artist. The Art Centre also helps artists to market their work and holds regular art workshops and training sessions. Most recently Ngukurr artists have learnt to screenprint and now Ngukurr sells its own handprinted range of t-towels and silk scarves.

Description
Ngukurr Art Centre is a not for profit organisation and is a place for local artists to create, display and sell their work. The enterprise is owned and governed by Ngukurr Art Aboriginal Corporation and the Board of directors are Indigenous locals, representing Ngukurr's seven different clans. The artists working through the art centre are from traditional homelands stretching North to NE Arnhem Land, Central Arnhem Land, south to Tennant Creek, east to the Gulf country and Groote Eylandt and west to Katherine. The rich and expansive diversity of different Aboriginal cultures spanning such a vast area is reflected in the range of styles in the art centre. The styles of art produced in Ngukurr are as distinctive and varied as its artist's backgrounds. A common element amongst emerging artists is their use of bold, lively colours that exudes vibrancy. Ngukurr Arts produces everything from traditional to the new wave of contemporary Aboriginal art. Cultural stories are painted with passion and enthusiasm, predominantly on canvas, but other mediums include prints, carvings, necklaces, weaving, batik, clothing, pottery and photography. The Ngukurr Arts Centre is open for public viewing from Monday – Friday 10am-4pm. Also on offer, upon appointment, people are welcomed to come and meet and talk with artists and to see their developing pieces.
